My name is Dan Fearson, I’m a reporter for Highlands Today. I was thinking about doing an article on medical marijuana and reform movements. I have spoken with people at the state level, and I would like to find a local angle or local ties for the article. If you know someone, are involved with any type of reform movement, or maybe you’re someone who just feels like marijuana should be legal, I would like to talk to you.

I am really looking forward to the completed parkway. I was wondering how they are going to connect to the Highlands Ave./Martin Luther King Blvd. portion though. At first I thought that it was going to run by the boys and girls club but now the more I look at it I don’t think it will. Maybe it’s going to run parallel to the train tracks in front of the train station. That would make more sense to me.

The construction is a nightmare. Hopefully we won’t have to put up with it for too long. Anyone know when the completion is forecasted for?

Gang graffiti

Unforutnately it seems that gang related graffiti is becoming a problem in our county. In case anybody missed it the original article is here: http://www2.highlandstoday.com/content/2008/mar/11/gang-graffiti-found-throughout-lake-placid/?news

I have noticed alot of the stop signs in the desoto city neighborhood in Sebring have graffiti on them. Is anybody else seeing this in their neighborhood also?

If they do find whoever is responsible I hope they make them pay for new signs. If it is minors causing the problem I believe the parents should be responsible for the financial burden of removing the graffiti or complete replacement of the signs.

I am hoping that this is a case of wannabe gang members, instead of the real thing. With all the crime going on lately it seems quite possible that gangs have a presence in our county.

What will your children be doing for the summer?

I was wondering what parents did with their child(ren) for the Summer Months when school lets out.

I’ve noticed there is really nothing for those children that have begun Middle School. Do you let your son/daughter stay home alone or do you know of a program or camp that the older children can attend in and around Sebring? I could be wrong on there being nothing for the older children and I’d be happy if corrected on this one. I just hate the thought of our communities children left at home alone all day with no supervision. God forbid that something went wrong not to mention how boring this could be for them.

Please vote for the candidate you support for President and feel free to comment regarding your selection. I think it will be interesting to compare this to the area primary results.

Are Senior Citizens Really the Happiest Americans?

Don’t know how many of you saw this article, but I know several papers across the nation ran it… This link goes to the one closest to the Associated Press version that I could find through a short Google search.

http://www.journalgazette.net/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080419/NEWS10/804190310

I asked a few senior citizens around the county about their own lives and I also mentioned the study to see what they thought. That story will be in Sunday’s Highland’s Today.

Until then, I wanted to ask everyone--seniors, baby boomers, Generation Xers and even my fellow Gen-Y’s--what they thought about this. Is there any truth to the study? If it’s true, why is that? Is it simply the fact that they’re retired or is there something deeper to it, like their life experiences before they retired? Will younger generations find themselves as happy as their older counterparts when they become seniors? ...or am I just asking dumb questions?
