I in general agree with you. I think Gruden and Allen are doing a pretty good job. The two knocks Gruden gets publically are:
(1) He does not take the time to develop offensive players. I think this is true, as the team has had a really tough time developing any of the offensive draft picks they have picked up since he joined the team. Most of the performers on offense these days are cast offs from elsewhere or traded for (Galloway, Dunn, Garcia, Griese, Hillard, etc.) Except for one good year from Clayton, and the development of the offensive line this past year (which I will give him credit for that since that was an awful mess two years ago), the other offensive draft picks have done little. Gradkowski will be off the team by the opening of camp. I don’t have much hope for the new QB drafted this year, but maybe Gruden will prove me wrong.
(2) Gruden does not listen to anyone around him. He even sort of admitted this an interview this past year, and admitted he is trying to change. I hope so, as no one can do it all as coach in the NFL anymore. Joe Gibbs is a great leader as he knows how to rely on those around him. I hope Gruden learns the same.
Still, Gruden did win a Super Bowl with Dungy’s defense and a bunch of cast offs on offense. He gets my vote in my book. This past year was a big surprise. Next year will be tougher but I hope they can return to the playoffs. We will have to wait and see if that comes to pass.
