Do you have any comments on opinions currently expressed in Highlands Today?

This one caught my attention today. What do you think?

Please read the entire article before commenting. Thanks.

I’ve formed a preliminary opinion, but I’d like to hear yours first.  I’m going to read it again, just to make sure my opinion is valid before I comment.

My only comments are that Palin is coming across as being fairly shallow, and the author is coming across as one deserving of his last name.

I do want to say one more thing. It seems that for their own ends, a small segment of our society wants to perpetuate racial, ethnic, and gender conflict in our society, when the real issue is economic exploitation of the working class regardless of racial, ethnic, or gender group.

I don’t get it. Please explain deserving of his last name.

Here’s today’s opinion piece that I felt hit the mark. Also, it’s kinda what bwana was saying above. What do you think people?

Guy’s last name is White...fitting. I think it is funny when white men try to act like life isn’t fair to them. Cry me a river, baby.
I’m with abrand and bwana that this guy is trying to keep the racist ideas flowing.

I agree. We just talked about the growth of government in class. My teacher says it happened in 3 stages:
First was the Civil War. Previous to the war, government was set up to protect the existing market, but with the secession of the South, gov. had to get bigger to protect the union. Leaders saw that a fragmented country would be easy pickings to foreign invaders so the preservation of the union at all costs was the priority.

The next growth of government came with the Progressive Era when people started to unionize for safer working environments and people found out that the standards of food preparation was horrible (thanks to Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle) so government had to step in and regulate industries because those big businesses would not have done the right thing on their own.

Finally, the Great Depression forced government to step it up once again. People say the New Deal was bad and good for the country, but the fact is that people would have literally starved to death without some type of social programs.

This info is all courtesy of my lecture notes mixed with my own words (can’t take full credit).

Now here we stand at another crossroads. People get their panties in a wad about taxes, but then wonder why their roads have pot holes and who the heck is going to fix them? I said in class the other day that the U.S. has relatively low taxes compared to other countries and some kid piped up and said, “Yeah, but those are communist countries.” The teacher told him he had no clue what he was talking about. Incidentally, I think this was the same kid who asked if the entire Civil War was fought at Gettysburg (She told him to sue his school because they didn’t teach him anything...ha ha).

Regarding the tax issue dmommy, I sense most Americans are willing to pay their share based on their income. What irks most of us is the billions that go to foreign countries that can’t, never have, and never will be able to wipe their own butts.

And hate us regardless of how much we try to help them.

Mr. Mixon thinks he has answered the True/false question re. global warming. IMHO he didn’t THINK about it long enough before putting ink to his opinion. Anybody got a better opinion?

But they owe us.  And, on the grand scale (world economics/stability) they know it.  Wanna do something good for America?  Shore up, create a strong dollar.  My simplified thought:  Produce rather than consume, borrow and appease others.  Protectionism isn’t necessarily a bad thing, ya’ know.,

I think he missed the mark.  The icecaps that are melting aren’t in the water.  A more accurate “experiment” would be to put the ice cubes on a tray beside the full water glass, with the lip of the tray over the glass, so that any water on the tray would flow into the glass.  Then see what happens!  That said, I’m not convinced that people are causing the icecaps to melt.  According to scientists, the last time we had a period of global warming, all of Florida except the Lake Wales Ridge (Lake Wales to Lake Placid) was under water - and that was long before man arrived on the scene.

Right KL, most ice caps and glaciers are at much higher elevation than the seas and oceans.

Sorry Mr. Mixon, you’re just another idiot with pen and paper.  duhhhhhhhhh
