Yes…
It is quite disappointing they have not pursued the roomates (or whatever they would be called) in this one.

I’m not certain if this is where the post for Anthony’s blog go or not but this is where the link directed me, so here goes.

What was the deal with the over sized clown suit Couey was wearing in court yesterday (02/11/07) Anthony ? Was that some sort of strategy by the defense or did Couey just get the bottom of the community barrel for the convicts to dress out for court? At any rate it fit the persona he was attempting to portray to the jury, but apparently didn’t sway the Judge according the ruling on the motions on retardation.

I never thought this guy was an intellectual giant. Is he retarded or not? Well, considering the diagnosis of MR is subjective based on a battery of IQ tests, conceivably anyone can claim
to be retarded. Aside from Down’s Syndrome, there is no definitive blood test for mental retardation.

The planning, the abduction, and disposal of the body in itself shows he knew that what he
was doing was wrong. A defendant can’t claim to be incompetent if he can go through these
steps and commit a crime.

I’m wondering if Couey will continue with his MR act today?  I thought the judge’s statement yesterday made it clear that Couey wasn’t MR, but the news said there will be another hearing on this, probably after the jury gives a verdict.

I think John Couey should be put out of his misery, just like he did Jessica. I think we waste way to much money on the trials for the idiots that do this type of crimes to children. I am a paralegal, student, and still do not understand why the court system is setup this way. They do not deserve the right to appeal or anything else. They did not give the child any appeals, so why should they have one.

I’m really beginning to like Judge Howard.  He seems to be a straightforward judge and doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone.  I’m sure he’s trying to move this trial along as quickly as he can.  We need more judges like that.

It has been decided that he can’t claim Mental Retardation and so far I’ve heard nothing about an insanity defense. He kidnapped Jessica and held her for 3 or 4 days. He killed her with intent, he raped her with intent, according to his own confession he withheld food and water except for sparse nurishment. I just do not see how the defense can use insanity as a defense. I might be wrong but I hope I’m not!

"Insanity” is the defense to use when there are no other options or excuses. He did it, they know it and they will try (it seems) anything. It appears there attempts on MR are going nowhere rightfully so.
One word from this scum needs to be heard. “Guilty"… Take the punishment for this crime committed.

I find it interesting that the judge says “the confessions can be used” and all of a sudden John Couey starts coloring in coloring books in the court room. He is trying to make the Jury think he is crazy. even if the experts say he is not crazy.

The Image is a very important thing in a trial, it can sway a vote on the jury.  “h, but he seems so nice”............... YA.......... just ask that dear little girl!!

Did not get a chance to see that but I’m sure his lawyer said it would be OK to color.
What a mockery of the system.

Anthony,

I have a question. Is Mark Lunsford there? If so can you see him and do you have any idea how he might be holding up during all this. Devastated I know, but how is he handling the jury selection process?

Thanks!!

It to this day blows my mind that these type of crimes happen.  If we started giving all of these people the death penalty without the option to just sit in prison the rest of thir lives maybe some would think twice before commiting the act.  The fact the they are trying to spare his life beacuse he could be retarded is unreal.  Jessicas state of mind didnt matter when he chose to kill her so his shouldn’t be considered either!

Studies have shown that the threat of the death penalty has virtually zero effect on a person’s intention to commit a crime. The reason is the people who commit these kinds of heinous crimes are not normal, rational people, who would pause to consider the possible penalty.

The system this courts and judges have really SUCKS.....Everytime someone commits this kind of violance or rape, crime, they always come out and say that is a Mental problem or that he or she is mentally retarded.
When they commit the crime they are very concious of what they are doing. but time to get on the witness stand it all changes. That is why we have so many sexual predators on the street they serve time and back on the street they go and commit the same crime killing innocent victims.
You have a father that lost everything he had in his life his precious daughter Jessica, to a sick WACKO on the street....
They need to hang this guy by his b_ _ _ _s, then buried him ALIVE.

If someone commits a crime such as this, then they are in fact insane.  No normal person would do such a thing. So they would of course be “very conscious” of their acts, but that does not preclude them being “mentally retarded”.

What I want to know is,"Why is this man allowed to doodle in court?!!” It’s like no remorse, and an attitude of,"Oh what the hell!!”
Retarded, I’m sorry but I don’t buy that.  His lawyer I’m sure is advising him to look like he’s not all their.  He planned what he did and he knew exactly what he was doing, no retarded individual has the mental capacity to do what Couey did.
May God have mercy on you, you will need it.
