On December 4, 2006, Jena High School student Justin Barker, age 17, was assaulted by other Jena High students. According to reports, earlier that day Barker, a white student, bragged about how one of his alleged attackers, Robert Bailey, Jr., had been beaten up by a white man the Friday before.[3] Barker, who denies making the comments, was then knocked to the ground after being hit in the back of his head. From there, according to white witnesses, a group of black students followed suit by repeatedly kicking him, though black witnesses deny that this occurred.[15] Barker, who was left unconscious after the attack, was examined by a doctor at the local hospital. In the meantime, the six students accused of the attack, eventually dubbed the “Jena Six”,[16] were arrested.

Very sad state of affairs all the way around.  It’s quite apparent that there are and have been for awhile, some major racial problems.

Until people learn how to talk and also listen, rather than resorting to violence, the problem will NEVER be solved, and instead only escalate.  I fear someone will lose their life if the situation in Louisiana is not handled properly!

Sounds like an assault to me. Hitting someone in the back of the head can cause spinal cord damage which is why it isn’t allowed in boxing. It can be charged as attempted murder. Kicking someone when they are down is cowardly and most definitely an assault. If they did this they belong in prison. There certainly must be a trial to examine the evidence.

While the kids who put the noose in the tree “deserved” to get their butts kicked, doing so is called vigilantism, and lowered the offended kids to their level.

I agree.

Since we’re given two different versions of what happened, it is a good bet that the truth lies somewhere inbetween.

I do think that if the six black guys had been attempting to murder the white guy, then he’d be dead.  It seems like a trumped up charge to me.

No argument here. The noose incident being blown off by the School Board puts a tone on the situation that leads people to be more understanding about the black kids actions then is justified.

Hanging nooses in the trees was completely ignorant of the white kids. Bragging about ‘how cool’ it was that a black kid got his butt kicked by a white man previously, is extremely stupid. Attacking someone and causing trauma to the body is a crime, however. Just because someone does something that offends you, makes you cringe, completely fills you with hate, does not justify you taking matters into your own hands in a violent matter. Will that be their defense? “Yes, judge… we beat this kid to a pulp, but he totally pissed us off”. (I’m not going to speculate about how bad his injuries were, considering many media outlets have differed on this) What makes me mad is that everyone at this protest is screaming for justice. Sharpton and Jackson have not said one thing about punishing these kids in order to find justice for Justin. (A lesser one that they would find ‘suitable’wink

I’m completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death. -George Carlin

First off the Jena 6 should have been charged with a hate crime. I realize the assaliants were black and the victim was white, but fair is fair. Now why is it white kids cannot hang around with their own kind by a tree? Wasn’t there another tree the black kids could hang under? Let’s face facts. Racism goes both ways. Just because the accused are black does not give them a reason to break the law.

“Yes, judge...we beat this kid to a pulp, but he totally pissed us off”.  end quote

You would be horrified to find that many, MANY people feel just this way!

There are parents who are actively teaching their children to think and react in exactly this way.  As in the case of the school bus incident right here in the Tampa area.  There is another thread on this forum discussing it.  The mother was sentenced to a year in jail.

That’s the crux of the biscuit. Seems like when a white man attacks a Muslim, Black, or mexican it gets hate crime status. A group of blacks in this case beat the daylights out of a white kid and the Black community gets their panties in a bunch ‘cause these kids have been arrested.
Case in point...a few years back three males and one female all teenagers hopped a train in rural Michigan, due to the train picking up speed they could not get off untill it slowed down again.
When they finally were able to get off the train, it was in a bad neighborhood of Flint Michigan.
Under the guise of assisting these kids a group of black kids escorted the four white teens to a local park where they beat two of the whites to death, left the other male unconscious and severly injured, and repeatedly raped the girl to unconsciousness and left her for dead.
Now if that was not hate ,I’d like to know what hate is. As usual Al Sharpton got involved, the blacks were all charged as minors, for manslaughter.

Yep, you get Sharpton and or Jackson involved ranting and raving every single time.  They’re largely to blame for escalating the situation.  They’re experts at making a crime seem justified, and illicitng sympathy from the public for the criminals.  They are what you call con artists!

Our nation and world would be a better place to live in if we all learned to be more diversified. Adversity will always exist till we do.

Actually hanging the nooses in the tree should have been referred to the FBI as a hate crime.

It’s a free country. People should be able to and will, stand in any public place they wish.

Unless they’re white kids?

Under what law? I am not aware of any law prohibiting hanging nooses in a public place unless there is somebody in it!

The truth is usually somewhere between.

This happened in a school. Don’t you think there was somebody who came to his aid before they could kill him? I’m betting they had security at the school that responded to the disturbance!
