Since August 2006, the state has offered free hurricane inspections through its My Safe Florida Home program to help residents better fortify their homes. As part of a quality assurance review, the state is re-inspecting thousands of homes to make sure the first inspections were accurate. An analysis of the two reports is due later this month.

The Tampa Tribune randomly selected 72 homes across the state and found widespread discrepancies between the two inspection reports.

Are you surprised by the problems with My Safe Florida Home?

Although I haven’t applied for an inspection, it appears that I am unable to benefit from the matching funds provided in the program (neither are most Hillsborough residents) because I am not in the 130 mph wind zone. That meant that, by law, my home won’t be affected by hurricane force winds............yeah right!

If they want inspections done correctly, they should require more than a one-day class with an open-book test at the end of the class. They have made a significant change by requiring either two years of prior inspection experience or that they be a licensed engineer, architect or contractor. This won’t eliminate every mistake in the inspections, but it is a step in the right direction. Although, for what they’re paying for inspections, I doubt many competent architects or engineers will find it cost effective for them to drop their current work just to do inspections.

The home inspection business sounds like a good way for criminals to get paid to check out a home before a burglary!

You are right think.
Also a way for the Feds to find anything they may decide is illegal.
The same has been said for workment that come to your home.  Don’t you wonder just what they are doing when they are in the attic, or poking around the garage?

If they had built the houses to last a long time, they would not have to worry about them. Quality costs money, and no one wants to pay for it anymore. So you get an uneven slab, corners that are not square, doors that don’t fit properly, roofs that are wavy from warped cheap 3 ply wood, wiring that squirrels, rats and mice can chew into etc, etc.
