Workers in the Tampa Bay area were a bit happier last month but ranked dead last among the nation’s cities in job confidence and satisfaction, according to a survey released this week. Read The Full Story.
Why do you think workers are unhappy in the area? Post your comment here.
I moved down here from the NorthEast about 2 years ago. Thankfully I still work for my old company, as the salaries down here are horrible.
I can’t say anything about satisfaction, since I’m not working locally, but even the commuting has gotten worse and I can see that impacting everyone..
Moved here from the midwest about 5 years ago. Salaries are higher here but, so is the cost of living. Traffic is not as bad as it was in Austin, TX but, drivers are worse here about speeding and running red lights, etc… Job satisfaction? Well not sure from one to the next if I’m going to be let go or not, its a sign of the times. I don’t think its a reflection on the bay area I think its a reflection of America overall. Corporations have become so greedy that it has destroyed the economy and the moral of most americans. We’re all just tired!
We have a very poorly educated workforce and very few high paying jobs as a result. This combination results in a lot of unpleasant customer service jobs such as food service, call center support, etc. In addition, Tampa isn’t a very attractive place for young professionals and they move out as a result. The brain drain in Tampa is amazing...no wonder people here seem so stupid! I wonder how the average Tampa IQ compares to other cities such as Atlanta, San Diego, Boston, Denver, Austin, and other desirable places for young people. If it wasn’t for family and a fairly good job, I would have moved out a long time ago.

SH: You might consider relocating out of TBay and into Alabama, thus raising the per capita IQ in both locations.

I think you nailed it pretty well. There are a lot of crappy jobs here and not so many good ones.
But I do think that the cost of living and taxes here are lower than just about anywhere else I’d consider a desireable place to live. And the weather is nice too.
I’m lucky enough to work in a profession where my employer has to compete on a national level to attract employees. That means that they have to pay salaries similar to those on the West Coast and the Northeast for the same type of work. Unfortunately there aren’t many jobs like that around here.
there are crappy jobs everywhere you look. Not everyone in Silicon Valley works as a programmer or systems’ analyst. But the sensationalized jobs are just that.
For my part, I’m secure in my job. But thats because of the type of job I have (nursing -RNs to be specific).
As for the doflunky who thinks the Bay Area IQ is something to call into question, please help yourself and head north. Not only will you be rid of all of us dimwitts, but by leaving, you will raise Tampas’ IQ level a few notches.
How about “THEM” apples?

This is a result of people voting Republican. You could offer a Republican CEO/Businessman 5 rocket scientists and if they ask for something more than minumum wage and (gasp!!) health insurance, they complain they cannot find qualified work force and then they go hire illegal aliens.

Corporate America is the ruination of America.
If Florida’s problem is “a result of people voting Republican,” how do you account for Louisiana, and New Orleans in particular? Prior to Katrina, a natural disaster there was the mailman missing a days work and delaying the welfare checks.

Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia don’t fare much better in education.
The top performing states for education and economic well being are blues states, go figure.
The education system has changed very little from the 40 years of liberal congressional dominance. The education system has pretty much followed the course charted by the liberals in charge. The handful of republican-based congressional years have changed very few things in education. The point is, you’re still seeing liberalism in motion -otherwise most educators would not claim to be left-leaning (and they do at that). Consistently more money has been pushed toward education, not less. What has changed a lot since many of US were children is the expectation from graduating classes. They have (for many years) been dumbing down requirements, and taking away the incentives to do well (because it would hurt the feelings of those who couldn’t achieve the higher marks or excellence) -and this is the result.
Time was, back when I was a kid in school, you were openly praised for doing above-average work.
Now that is not encouraged because the other students might be upset or it could hurt their self-esteem because they can’t easily achieve what the few who set the curve CAN. THAT is liberalism in action.
Hawks’ comments are very consistent, and make me think he is a very young person, maybe in his twenties. Too young to have known anything BUT a liberal-dominated government (being the Clinton years), and the only REPUBLICAN (note I didn’t say CONSERVATIVE) Government being the current Bush. And Bush is not a conservative by any stretch of the imagination. He has in many respects out-liberaled the liberals, and if he wore a donkey instead of the elephant, the libs would be praising him.
Corporations have no formal obligation to society. They are only obliged to make profits for their shareholders.
I still wonder who Hockeyray works for, since every breath is spewing hatred for corporations or the rich. I would certainly hope he isn’t hypocritical enough to be gaining a living directly or indirectly from either of the above.
