Some states have resorted to creating odd taxes as a way to increase revenue. Gov. Charlie Crist has proposed an amendment to cut property taxes on today’s ballot.
How do you think the state should handle its financial crisis?
Make government on the local and state level accountable for every penny it spends. There is tremendous waste, I’m sure, of our tax dollars on the state and local level. Just as we know there is on the national level.
I also think that tourism dollars could be impacted more. People don’t seem to mind forking over more money when it comes to a vacation in Florida.
Maybe if Floridians cast votes based more on financial competence rather than political rhetoric, we’d have more effective management of our tax dollars. How are the family values and social program candidates working out?
Don’t you ever go on vacation?
Most people budget for vacations. When someone budgets, let’s say $ 500 per day and taxes go up, they will still spend $ 500. Less money will go to businesses and more to sales and bed tax.
Business gets the double whammy, less revenue and more tax. What is bad for business, our employers and source of income, is bad for everyone. In addition, because of SOH, those that own businesses paying increased taxes.
In the long, run overtaxing tourists is not good for Florida’s economy.

Calm down!
And yes, we go on vacation twice a year. We returned from Italy two months ago, and are going back to Italy in October. We’ll also be going to Lake Tahoe in August of this year. Anything else you want to know?
Oh, the poor poor tourists! They couldn’t possibly afford to pay any more than they do on vacations. Give me a break. Me and my husband budget just like most people do for vacations. And if you want to go on vacation bad enough, then you find a way!
No, tourists will not stop coming to Florida if they have to pay a little more. Don’t worry!

When it raises tourist taxes, the government is not really taking money from the tourists, they’re taking it from the residents of Florida.
If the Italian government raised taxes on tourist services in Venice, eventually there would be fewer Merchants there? The money grabbing Shylock’s there are just as evil as the ones we have here.

I think you are the only one who understands what you mean.
I can get my head around some of it, the general theory, but the execution evades me.
I just can’t see how a additional 2% of tax is going to crush the tourism industry.

Exactly.

It wouldn’t. It would be a great source of some extra revenue. There will always be people who are more than willing to spend a little extra for a vacation and a good time in Florida.
STUKA notes: When it raises tourist taxes, the government is not really taking money from the tourists, they’re taking it from the residents of Florida.
SH: As a private business owner for the past 24 years, I concur that this is an accurate assessment.
I also concur that a “2% tourist tax increase” (whatever that’s supposed to mean) would not unduly harm the Florida toursim business.
But make no mistake that any such raise in taxes does not benefit the private business owners. It merely directs more money to Tallahassee.
If you happen to be pleased with the financial behavior coming out of Tallahassee, it’s reasonable you might be cool with more $$ going there to be nicely diluted before returning to communities around the state.

I didn’t say crush, squeeze maybe. Over-taxation is a slow death. Especially in a slower economy, a foolish tax policy creates a deadly embrace.
There’s only a finite amount of money that people are willing to spend on vacations. When taxes go up 2%, merchants and hoteliers will have 2% less cash flow. Less cash flow means less money for wages and services from their vendors and suppliers. Put off painting another year, hire one less person, that sort of thing.
That 2% is coming from your pocket not the tourists’.
Taxes take money out the flow of daily commercial enterprise and puts into the hands of government employees, who we know are not the best stewards of our money.
I can get my head around some of it, the general theory, but the execution evades me.

I’m not pleased with the money coming out of any type of government! Whether it be local, state or national. Wish I had the answer for corruption!
However, raising the tourist tax would still be extra revenue for the state. Which we could use for schools, etc. There is revenue that we get for many things locally that come from Tallahasse I’m sure. Anything extra that we can get is better than nothing.
Everyone pays the price of inflation. Even tourists.
I dare someone to start a ‘supply side’ or ‘demand curve’ post. See what kind of intelligent discussion you get then! A couple will not even understand how this relates.

Sounds to me like you’re all talk and no substance.
You’re “daring” someone else, but don’t think to start one yourself!
So instead, it makes you feel better to take cheap shots at others, because you apparently have nothing more intelligent to say.

See, exactly. Just the response I expected. All mud slinging and no real intelligent comment. If you had the slightest concept of economics you would know when prices rise, demands drop. Although there is opportunity to raise prices to increase profits, it does not always happen and usually doesn’t. To simply say you can raise the tourist tax to increase revenue is obviously coming from someone that has no concept of the real world. Sure, you could solve all these problems if we just took your advice. Maybe you should quit living off your husband and get a job, and find out what life is really like. Tourism is a very big portion of Florida income that you are of such a big parasite. Maybe you should even run for mayor. That seems to be their concept, just raise the operating costs and tax more. I hope you live long enough to see how those like you can ruin the lives of everyone else. Sure, make the tourist pay for that big SOH tax benefit you are so happy about. I also hope you never have to use any of that precious money you squander so tightly to help your grandchildren who won’t have a place to live because they can’t afford the taxes on a new home. Or, perhaps they have already learned they can not count on you for anything. Of course, don’t worry about all those other grandchildren out there. We already know what you think of them.
Now, I am sure you buddy in ignorance, Krusty, will be glad to jump in too. He is always all to willing to say so much while saying so little. Then the conversation will be complete. I expect your replies by morning. Nity-nite.
Of course, you could get a life and not spend all your waking hours on these forums. But you do certainly get fair minded people excited to respond.

You’re crackin’ me up! Look who’s calling the kettle black? Considering you started it. Intelligence, you have the market cornered. Just ask yourself.
But of course, anyone reading your last post will see that for themselves!
