I dare someone to start a ‘supply side’ or ‘demand curve’ post. See what kind of intelligent discussion you get then! A couple will not even understand how this relates.

Sounds to me like you’re all talk and no substance.

You’re “daring” someone else, but don’t think to start one yourself!

So instead, it makes you feel better to take cheap shots at others, because you apparently have nothing more intelligent to say.

See, exactly. Just the response I expected. All mud slinging and no real intelligent comment. If you had the slightest concept of economics you would know when prices rise, demands drop. Although there is opportunity to raise prices to increase profits, it does not always happen and usually doesn’t. To simply say you can raise the tourist tax to increase revenue is obviously coming from someone that has no concept of the real world. Sure, you could solve all these problems if we just took your advice. Maybe you should quit living off your husband and get a job, and find out what life is really like. Tourism is a very big portion of Florida income that you are of such a big parasite. Maybe you should even run for mayor. That seems to be their concept, just raise the operating costs and tax more. I hope you live long enough to see how those like you can ruin the lives of everyone else. Sure, make the tourist pay for that big SOH tax benefit you are so happy about. I also hope you never have to use any of that precious money you squander so tightly to help your grandchildren who won’t have a place to live because they can’t afford the taxes on a new home. Or, perhaps they have already learned they can not count on you for anything. Of course, don’t worry about all those other grandchildren out there. We already know what you think of them.

Now, I am sure you buddy in ignorance, Krusty, will be glad to jump in too. He is always all to willing to say so much while saying so little. Then the conversation will be complete. I expect your replies by morning. Nity-nite.

Of course, you could get a life and not spend all your waking hours on these forums. But you do certainly get fair minded people excited to respond.

You’re crackin’ me up! Look who’s calling the kettle black? Considering you started it. Intelligence, you have the market cornered. Just ask yourself.

But of course, anyone reading your last post will see that for themselves!

Stuka-

I have to agree with what you are saying 100%. I have read the entire thread and I concur that SOH is bad for everyone other then those that happen to be here at the right time. So what if you lived here all your life, I believe its still in the United States and there should be rules in place, so taxation is fair to all citizens. So why not start a CAAHIF (Can’t Afford a House In Florida) that supersedes the SOH and make them pay my taxes because of the home prices. They have all the equity, so why should they care....right! Why no talk about the Mil rate of 2.4% which to me is the problem. I think if you put a basic cap from 0-500,000 homes of 3000.00 a year, no more, no less and houses from 500,000-1,000,000 pay 6,000 a year and those over 1 Mil pay a flat rate of 10,000 a year. Raise state tax by 2% so everyone pays fairly for goods and services and get a boost from tourist. Then how about the government figure out what it gets and create a real budget and not a money cow to hire minority and other social programs that are not really needed. We need to draw a line in the sand and start living by it.....tired of all the grey.

We are slowly taxing business out of Florida and if that happens we all lose. Not sure why this is so difficult to understand. Common sense tells you that SOH is not fair and anyone that says different is only saying so cause it benefit’s them. I think that is the meaning of selfishness?? This is why we have John McCann, Hillary and Obama on the ballet for Presidency. We don;t want real change, we just want to hear about it and go on with business as usual. Out leaderships sucks from top to bottom and board like these are everywhere....outlet to bitch....bitch ...bitch.....

No matter who wins we will still be bitching cause in the end they are all the same, some differences but not enough for any real change. Whether Democrat or Republican this verse holds true for both parties. “After all is said and done, alot more was said then done”

Funny thing that you said that. You obviously have not looked at the census report. We had about 13,500,00 in 1994 and of which 20% were not home owners and the population of Florida is almost 19,000,000 and many people that had lived here for many year finally bought a house from 2001-2006, so I would say I would not be to cocky on this will not get voted on again and soon. Plus, I am not sure if it’s Constitutional to have this type of exemption in the first place. SOH will die....it just may be a slow death. Obviously this is a touchy subject for you, I assure you those that have bought a house after 1995 have the same feelings as you, I suggest you respect that.

What’s funny is that you say that it’s a touchy subject for “me”.  This thread wasn’t intended to rehash SOH.  And I did not bring it up.  Yet, others continue to harp on and on. The people who voted no, “bitch” and throw temper tantrums because things didn’t go their way.  Then start making personal attacks to everyone who’s covered under SOH, supposedly to make themselves feel better and to justify their anger. Unfounded accusations never go over very well with anyone!

Amendment 1/SOH was voted on and PASSED in overwhelming numbers by the people of Florida.

I’d like to “suggest” that those who are in denial about the fact that Amendment 1 passed, learn to “respect” and deal with it.  It’s not going away no matter how much you keep wishing and hoping that it will.

And stop trying to rehash the same very tired argument.  Maybe you can start a thread dealing with just that topic, and then all of you can have a bitchfest all to yourselves, instead of trying to shoehorn it into every thread.

You are so typical of what being an American means today “ What’s in it for me mentality”. I did not live in Florida at the time of the vote, so I did not get my due process to vote on such an important issue. So because I moved to Florida in 1997, I should be penalized for not being born here or moving here earlier. LOL Like I said, those that are opposed to it, benefit from it and will not back down even if it causes hardship to others. Great attitude. I guess your next line will be, you should not have bought a house if you could not afford the taxes....right. How about the stands if you can’t afford to live here move!!! You would not like that and would say I was being unfair and I would say you are right. SOH is unfair and hopefully someday we can find a middle ground that will appease us all. The ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME attitude is what’s got us in this situation in the first place!  Shame on you.

This thread isn’t getting anywhere.

One thing for sure, the fight for Florida Property Tax reform is a long way from settled.

Which takes us back to the title of the thread,

“What should Florida do about its budget crunch?”

The answer “Tax others, instead of me”, won’t fly nor be quietly accepted.

You can’t depend on others to pay your way in the world.

Funny how things happen. I was listening to 970 AM with Jack Harrison and company as I do most mornings. There is a lawsuit that is gaining momentum to challenge SOH as unfair tax practice and that they predicted it has a good chance of winning and that Florida needs to start looking at the tax situation as a whole before the walls come down. SOH time is limited, I just did not know it was going to fall this quickly. I have asked many people outside of Florida about the concept and they all said the same thing, its great for those that have it.....and terrible for those that don’t. I guess my taxes will be going down soon.......smile With job cuts and those that are paying less then a few thousand’s a year will have to double up on taxes soon. I feel bad for those that will be hurt by this, but people like you (ME ME ME ME< GREED GREED GREED)....I say start paying your share or move out of Florida. LOL

While I personally agree with the criticism of SOH, I must interject here that if you moved here after the vote in 1992 (as I also did (late 1997)), then yeah, we kinda do have to accept the fact that we were not here when the vote was taken.

We did not have our “due process” (a criminal court term not related to elective politics) denied, because we were not taxpaying registered voters in the state of Florida in 1992.

We do have (and have had for over ten years now) the option to attempt to rally support for a repeal of the 1992 amendment.  But failing that then yes, “If you can’t afford the taxes, you should not have bought a house in Florida”

My wife and I have yet to take out a mortgage though we started discussing doing that as far back as 2002 - the year before we married.

I’d say the chances of us putting money down on a mortgage in Central Florida any time soon are slim.  Better for us to rent and channel the money we’d be paying in property taxes into our 401K instead.

I confess wondering more than once if we’ll ever find real estate in this part of Florida a sensible investment during the next seven years (our target for buying a “second” residence outside Florida).

We may just go ahead with plans to buy that second residence, while maintaining a simple rental agreement on something like we have now - a two bedroom townhouse in a relatively high dollar area of North Pinellas County.

The people that really get hammered in the current tax law are those that are not sheltered by SOH and never will be( out of state owners, landlords and commercial property owners). For one of those property owners, there’s no way of planning what the tax increases will be. It’s possible for property value goes down and tax assessment will go up. A person without very deep pockets should avoid Florida real estate, as the tax increase rate could far outpace the rate of increase in property value.

Because state can’t seem to find a way to scale back spending, they’ll tax what’s not protected. The portability clause only shelters more property from the government as a revenue source. Because of this the state will be forced to go after unsheltered property, sales tax and fees. The state will need to raise more money from fewer sources. As renters discover their rent is going up to pay for the increase property tax, they’ll be a little more supportive of property tax reform. Business will pass along the tax increases in the form of lowered service, increased prices and decreased wages.

We should make Hemp legal, grow it and put it to good use.

Nationally this would take us up out of this economic recession/depression just like eliminating the prohibition on alcohol in the 30’s.

STUKA, I’m not unaware that as a renter I will eventually get the trickle-down effect of the insane budgetary policies promoted by the SOH Amendment of 1992 (and enhanced this past January).

Sad, but our long term future may not be able to include Florida since in my expected lifetime of at least another 40+ years, there are now and will be in the future plenty of better places to live in North and Central America.

I have a rental in Brandon that I bought in 1999. I have been renting this house 3/2 half acre lot on dead end street since 2001. My original note was 900.00 a month for mortgage/tax and insurance and I was getting 1,100 month for it. I was making 200 bucks a month, but that was to put aside for normal wear and tear. Now, 7 years later my payment is 1680.00 with morgage/TAX and insurance and I can only get 1350.00, so I am losing money. Bottom line is that not everyone can be a home owner (Proof of this is the mortgage crisis) and people deserve a home to rent at a reasonable price. This tax situation is not fair to landlords that are trying to do the right thing, but are finding them-self going into the red. Same thing with business, I retired from the AF last year and I own a small business and I am getting tax to death and the idea of dems running things really puts a scare into me. Taxes are out of hand in the state and in the nation as a whole. We need to stop helping those that won’t help them-self. I won’t hold my breath for any real change with the candidate’s that are running for President...good grief. LOL

Just another greedy rich person crying their way to the bank.  You sound like you are losing money like these sports teams (Glazers) always talk about.

Your renter is still paying a big part of your monthly principal therefore putting free money in your pocket.  Someday you will sell this property for 2-3 times what you paid for it and continue to cry poor.

Pay your fair share and be happy.
