What most folks don’t understand about the Amendment is that while your annual property tax bill might be $250 lower, your home value just dropped several $ thousand. Whoever buys you home will be making up the tax shortfall that you avoided. First time buyers, Out of State buyers and Investors will get fleeced more than before. Whoever decides to buy property will be offering less money to make up for the tax hike. There is no free ride. What you don’t pay today will be paid for by whoever buys your house.
The only real way to reduce taxes is to cut government spending not shift the tax burden to someone else. When that someone else is business there will be reduced payrolls and increases prices. When that someone else are unprotected property owners, the price they will pay for Florida property will be lower.
Registered Republicans and Democrats will vote on a presidential candidate for their respective parties.
All registered voters can vote on Amendment 1, which essentially doubles the homestead exemption and allows portability of a homesteader’s Save Our Homes benefit.
Tell us what you think about today’s ballot.
I voted a couple days ago. I personally am hoping that Amendment 1 passes. I especially like the idea of Save Our Home being portable.
I am headed to vote soon. I am voting NO on amendment 1. So, I guess that cancels out your vote for yes!
Absolutely voted NO on Amendment 1 and was disappointed to see it passed by a few percent more than the 60% needed.
My wife and I and all of our neighbors voted NO on amendment 1.
its only stupid if you dont have kids. if you do and you dont care about making them pay your taxes for you then you should’nt have hard feeling when your old and gray sitting in a wheel chair with a dirty diaper, and they just shove you out in the street . why should they care it wont effect them if you rot in the sun.
The quick story about a Shop Rag! I swear this has something to do with this thread!!
I used to work as a mechanic for an Airline. The airline supplied us with clean shop rags everyday. A company came, picked up the dirty rags, cleaned them, and returned them for use. These rags cost the airline big money (25 to 50 cents each). They had thousands of them, and we used hundreds everyday. Our bosses were adamant about returning used rags into the dirty bin, even if we took some home to use. Then the airline laid us off, despite the money saved. Well technically, they just moved our jobs up North.
John, one of my fellow mechanics got a job with the city. He was dumbfounded to see the city mechanics use the same rags as the airline. Difference is, they use their’s once and throw them in the trash. It’s too much trouble to clean them, he was told. It turns out that someone might actually have to do something.
This is a true story and only one example of waste. I purposely used this story because it’s about a small amount of waste.. But nickels and dimes add up. Let’s not even talk about the big ones.
If you own a home and voted NO, then you’re either stupid, or extremely misguided about the truth of government waste.
This waste exists on every level of government. It’s time for them to tighten up.
Look at all those police cars and municpal cars sitting in workers driveways. How much does that costs everyone of us. They drive them back and forth to work. How many people out their get that perk. I do not find any less crime because a Police Car is parked in the area. And if so they should just buy cars and stick them everywhere. Maybe we don’t really need police in the car. Would anyone like to calculate how many cars are sitting in driveways and what does it costs us? Does each police officer have their own car? Probably just pennies considering what gas is today. Let alone tires, wear and tear etc..... Let alone the price of each one of theses cars.
Can anyone find any other government waste that is going on or theses just the only two out there. By the way this is not the only state that allows municipal employees to drive town owned cars home so it does need to be look at for the waste factor in government. Thank god there some rules about street parking or driveways are small other wise they would probably take the fire trucks home too.
Here is something else that bothers me.
We actually vote someone to do the tax appraiser’s job. This job is requires much knowledge considering what our house is REALLY worth and what we actually owe in taxes depends on someone that is very knowledgeable in today’s market. Look at the mess the state is in on what actually our houses are worth? Alot of older homes that need substantial upgrading that would make them safe with TODAY’S building standards did get overpriced because thay do not meet today’s standards. We do pay higher insurance because of that. Most on different threads here keep talking about how dumb the newbies are in buying homes here. I say I got a fabulous deal because the tax asessor could have appraised my house for alot more money. Because my house does meet todays building standards. It did costs more to build that extra protection in. I do appreciate that I can live in a house this size where in the state that I came from would have only been a dream.
But taxes on the other hand have been unfair . How can you change it. Probably by making an Amendment One like this one to show everyone How dumb Save Our Homes is? Unequal. Everyone is right about that. So far including the newspapers we all agree on that. But over 60% want change and voted for it because it is what this group of legislators that we voted in could come up with after how special sessions? Don’t blame voters on this one . I think our legislators are the one that need to go back to the drawing board and do the right thing. But I don’t think anyone wants them too.
CHANGE the way we are taxed to make it equal.
nobody likes taxes ,but they are necessary. the problem with fl now ,and ive lived here my entire 55 years, is the tax system all together. it should not be possible to vote in an unfair taxing system. everybody is equal [ or should be ]the main problem i have is people i talk to could care less what you do to their children, as long as it doesn’t effect them [ this was actually said to me by 3 different people. thats about 30 % of the people i work with every day. and thats just the ones with the nads to say it out loud . theres got to be at least another 30% who don’t. i’m not mad at anyone , im more embarrassed that my generation cares so little about their children. maybe its just the people around me . we have passed our problem on to first time buyers , most people think this is making northerners pay to use the stuff we already paid for, and that makes since their should be a fee for that , but it should be a 1 time payment then your done. the only reason impact fees are here is if you buy or build a new house , you have committed a sin. impact fees are the result of the same mentality as sin taxes, yea we’ll vote for it, it wont cost me a dime if you tax new homes, so ill elect whoever will move my tax burden to someone else, and my generation seems to want it shifted to their children and grand children. [ or at least doesn’t care if you take it from them ] one day there will be less people with this unfair advantage and when that happens i wonder if they’ll vote in a measure to gouge people with save our tax break, i mean it may be 20 years but its not hard to figure up how much someone should have paid and how big of a bill to send them. WE are the ME gen
I see the problems starting with the buy now pay later attitude. In Government, it allows those in power to spend now and forcing someone else to figure out how to pay for it later. The rising housing prices meant an automatic increase in property tax revenues to cover the bills. Initiatives like SOH and the decline in the housing markets are forcing governments to face the past and present spending. If they cut current spending to have enough money to pay off debt, they end up with more problems as they put off spending until later.
Governments and Corporations could cut waste but since the people that make the decisions benefit most from the wasteful spending, it isn’t likely to happen. They will lay off some janitors or street workers. When people complain about dirty buildings or potholes, they can say they had to make “hard decisions”.
A friend of mine lives next door to the county’s head jailer. The jailer has a full dress squad car to drive back and forth to work. The County says it needs more Courtroom space and since the jail needs to be attached to the Courthouse, they need a new jail and Courthouse. I’ve been on Juries in the Courthouse and have never seen more than two of the eight Courtrooms in use. In public hearings on the need for a new Courthouse, employees said that Courtrooms are seldom used on Fridays. Many suggested a night court session to make more use of the space they have. The decision was to build a new jail and Courthouse. I’ve always thought that the decisions have already been made before they hold public hearings.

Incentives prime the idea pump.
Your rag story only works in an enterprise where participants in a cost savings program get to share some of the money saved. I doubt that idea would have come about had no one up the line had anything to benefit.
The airline was so focused on containing cost that they moved the entire operation to a lower cost venue, rags and all.

Maybe those of us who voted FOR Amendment 1, was because we think that it is a step in the right direction. And because we think that ultimately it will lead to more tax breaks, AND a more equitable tax for everyone. Golly, imagine that!
I’ve never heard such sour grapes in all my life from people who didn’t get their way on Amendment 1. And this is not just directed at this particular blogger, but to anyone who’s still crying and whining that Amendment 1 passed.
Stop trying to demonize those of us who voted for it, believe it or not, we really do want what’s best for Florida. Despite those of you who insist on continuing the temper tantrums.
