Without a doubt. If this had happened in the private sector (such as my company), this person would have been shown the door that day. It seems that doesn’t happen much in the government/public sector.

We saw this on the news last night and were horrified at the treatment of this man.  Completely inexcusable.  The person who did it, and anyone who watched and laughed should be fired.

I know she has a difficult job. Also I consistently support the police everywhere. I don’t think there is “more to the story.” I don’t care what the victim may have said, NOBODY deserves what she did. I don’t care how bad her day was. More upsetting to me are the individuals that watched and showed no reaction whatsoever. That is very damning evidence.  The Sheriff had better make some changes at lightning speed.  Tampa is my home and I’ve always loved and respected HCSO, but this incident, in my mind, cannot be swept away. I understand a little more clearly why there are so many people posting on TBO all the time condemning the police.  This is very very sad and scary.

Should police have arrested Jean Merola?

Don’t know exactly what happened.  I’ve heard different stories.

I’ve also seen some pretty belligerent old people as well.  I saw the news clip, and the Granny came off as some sweet old lady.  I doubt very seriously that’s how she acted on the night in question.

Should the cop have arrested her?  Don’t know.  If she absolutely refused to move, and absolutely refused what the police was requesting of her, then yes.  Even grandma is not immune to discipline!

Discipline? Cops are not there to discipline. The Courts discipline.

Yes, disciplined.  Just as a child is spanked or sent to time out, granny was in fact disciplined.  And she may well have deserved it.

When we are children we are taught to respect authority and the police.  They are our place to turn to when there is trouble.  When we grow up we realize that there are bad in every sector and just because someone happens to be in a place of authority it does not automatically make them a person to look up to.  Please let us see that these officers are treated in the same way that an employee in a private company would be.  They should be fired.  So often we see those in “authority” thinking they are above the law and that they have the inside track and do not have to follow the same rules that any decent citizen would.  To see thse offices smiling and laughing at what was done makes me shudder and unfortunately creates another black mark on the Florida penal system.  It is a sad day for any parent teaching about respect for authority.

Stuka, this is a lame attempt on your part.  The two stories don’t compare, and you know it.

This story can be an example though of the “one bad apple” theory.  Let us remember, that for the most part, the police are inherently good people.

Whenever there is a “bad apple”, swift action should be taken to correct the problem, such as immediate dismissal, so that the public doesn’t lose faith or respect.

Unfortunately, in the public sector, “swift action” (meaningful action) is not taken. Many times, it’s just a “slap on the wrist”.

She should be fired and arrested. PERIOD!!

Its about time this jail was exposed for what it really is. The staff in this jail truly believe they are above the law.

Felony charge of assault on a handicapped person is the LEAST they should do to this sorry excuse for a human being!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a racial hate crime. Like it was said above. If that was a white officer dumping a crippled black man on the floor we would have have Jesse Jackson and every other Black Civil Rights advocate raising holly h*ll and screaming bloody murder. There would be riots in the street, protests and marches of all kinds across the nation of epic proportions.
But...since it was a black officer with a crime against a white handicapped man it will get its 5 seconds of “fame” and get swept under the rug in the blink of an eye as soon as the sheriffs office pays him off. Pity. This is a real and serious tragedy that needs to be prosecuted to the FULLEST EXTENT.

You’re probably right in most cases.  They’re very careful to protect their own.  The same can be said for Doctors, Firemen, Lawyers etc.

But in this case, when you have a video that’s been shown to the public, there is usually swifter action.  Much harder to sweep under the rug!

The difference is that riots, protests, etc cause worst things than the actual assault. It shows more disrespect.  Our systems works most of the time. We as citizens no matter what our hertitage is should trust the system. It doesn’t matter handicap or not this should not ever happen to any human being. All should be fired.

I am outraged that there is no concern for humanity.  That Detention Deputy should be throughly ashamed of herself and should publicly ask for forgivness after being publicly fired!!!!!!  I’m glad that they all got caught because I’m sure stuff like that happens quite often in the jails and we just are not aware of it.  Those cops thinks they are “above the law” and do whatever they feel like to people on a daily basis.  I think we need some major changes in the hiring process in order to become a cop in the first place.  What a disgrace!!!

She should definitely be fired, and the ones who stood by and laughed should be disciplined severely.

Having said that, the guy in the wheelchair had to have done something to piss her off (called her the “N” word or something).  Whatever it was, she was still wrong.

OK-this man obviously took a wrong turn and ended up in the pen with the wrong Lady on the wrong day. But he does not deserve to be dumped on the FLOOR!  all the other tbo.com ‘posts’, ---thank you for taking the time to partake in this disgrace to human humanity! Other posts re:this event are true, You would have J.Jackson in Tampa faster than the Lighting. Now they will cover up the obuse with Marshall-Jones’ being released w/HSCO! WOW.

Yes, Deputy Jones should be fired. She not only committed this horrible act but wrote up no report. Clearly she knew she was wrong as did the people watching and laughing. It’s rather common for people to be beat by cops before they get to the jail in our county. These deputies are a few Oreos short of a package.  Thank God the film wasn’t destroyed.
