Lets see, where to start.
There are only 5, incandescent light bulbs in the house anymore, even the porch light has a fluorescent bulb in it.
The kids are grown and gone so we bought a counter top oven manufactured by Hamilton Beach. Its much smaller so it heats up faster and uses less electricity to do so plus it gives us multiple options such as convection as well as traditional back and broil. Also it generates less house warming heat and cools off faster.
We use the gas grill a lot, its cheaper than the stove, and again keeps the heat out of the house.
I worked at finding the best combination when I drive, ie grade of fuel, even the brand as well as finding what I call the “sweet” spot, the engine rpm my vehicle runs most efficient at. Its good for getting a consistent 34-35 mpg out of a car rated for 30 mpg. When you drive 40K miles a year it adds up fast. and its different between my car and my truck.
Tires aired properly, probably the easiest cheapest thing to do to save money, and the least often done. Estimates are 75% of the vehicles on the road have under inflated tires. Add to that keeping them balanced and the alignment done and tires last longer, roll easier and that means saved fuel as well as getting more mileage out of them.
Solar powered cloth dryer. Works great for heavy things like towels, and just about as fast as a dryer. Also good for sheets.
All computer monitors are LCD. There are usually two running when I am home, as my office is in the house. And when I am not in front of the computer, I shut it down In the “old” days that was frowned upon because the hard drive might not start back up. Thats not a problem today, and hasn’t been for at least 10 years.
When something we use is on sale, we stock up. and we pay close attention to cost per unit, the large size is not always the best buy any more.
Grocery bags make great trash bags., and they are free. We seem to get enough each week to take care of our needs.
Mulching blade on the lawn mower cuts way down on fertalizer needed and the need to rake and bag clippings.
We have two “dry” wells. These collect rain water and wife uses them to water her plants.
We found the house has terrazzo floors. We pulled the carpet and it dropped the electric bill about $75 a month in the summer. Keep the blinds closed during the day.
