At least 10 dogs and cats have died after eating apparently tainted food. Dozens of brands fall under the recall umbrella.

So anyone who uses Nutra Natural Choice Dry Food it is ok to use.

Unfortunatly this recall came 2 weeks to late. My boyfriends mom had to have their cat put to sleep do to renal failure after spending $300.00 to the vet to treat him. She had been feeding him the IAMS meat and gravy in the foil packs. Even though they have narrowed it down to certain date and plant codes I’m not sure that I would feed it to my cats. I have 3 cats and they only eat IAMS multi-cat dry food. I feel for all the families that have lost a family member or are dealing with astronomical vet bills to treat them.

I have used many of the canned brands of cat food mentioned in the recall. I lost my beautiful Snowshoe cat a couple months back to acute kidney failure. Our vet spent 10 hrs trying to save her, but we had to end her sufferring. I was heart broken, now I’m angry. I understand there are now many, many pet deaths and absolutely no recourse.

Three weeks ago I watched my cat of 16 years go into kidney failure. I thought it was his age. The week before I spent a little extra money and treated him to a can of cat food off his special diet. Some treat. I rushed him to the vet and the very same evening put him to sleep. Now three weeks later I am left with more than the mourning of the loss of my pet of 16 years, I am left with anger and rage. I took great care of my cat always keeping him indoors, the right food etc… I thought he would be at least 20. Never in my wildest nightmares did I think my cat would die from the same people who are supposed to be feeding them well with through their fancy advertisements and promises. Someone should definately pay for the losses mine and other families have gone through. I spent $550 in vet bills because of a stupid 50 cent can of cat food and the guilt and anger and the death of my cat was priceless.

Three weeks ago my cat Pumpkin became very sick within a day’s time. Three days before I had bought two packets of the Kitty Select beef and Gravy packet as a treat to my two cats. Pumpkin became very ill not being able to eat, drink or use the litter box. Within a day’s time Pumpkin passed away. My older cat was sick but he seemed to get over it. He did not eat as much of the packet as Pumpkin did. My family and I were heart broken that there was nothing we could do. If you want to read the rest of the story you can look under pet care below. We miss Pumpkin. He was not only our pet but our Family member.

My mother, who is 82, has a little silky terrier that has been with her for 9 years. That dog helped her through a lot of traumatic events, including the death of her husband. This dog means the world to her. Around Christmas she went to visit my brother in Daytona Beach and went to Petsmart to buy some dog food. She bought some cans and pouches to take. They were gone 10 days and when she returned the dog started showing symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. She took the dog to 3 different vets. The dog just seems to get worse. Surprisingly it is still alive but in a bad state. Her eyes are glazed over almost like she is blind. Some days she just doesn’t eat or drink anything. Her stomach blows up like a balloon. She was given a prescription for lasix. It takes her stomach swelling down for a while but then it goes up again. The dog is so weak it shakes when it stands up. It has to be carried. The dogs fur is so dull and falling out. My mom forces water into her. She refuses to put her asleep because this is the last reminder of her life before. The dog shows no sign of pain, but sleeps all the time. She blames herself for giving the dog the food. When the dog passes away, I wouldn’t be surprised if my mothers life starts to wither. I am so mad at how this could have happened and how slow the recall was put out in public. They keep saying it was only 10 animals that died, like its such a small number, who cares. This is a living thing that breathes air. This is not exceptable!

I lost my puppy of 10 weeks old due to the puppy food that I thought was so healthy and good for him. I spent lots of money taking him to one vet after another hoping someone would be able to tell me something different from the last one, Unfortunately the only thing I got was huge medical bills and I got to go home to NO PUPPY!!!!!!

I have a pure bred Westie who will not eat any kind of dog food. I tried everything the vet said still with no luck. There are recipes out that we can make for our pets. My dog loves boiled skinless chicken with rice and green peas. Of course I never add salt or any kind of seasoning. I also have cats that are 6 and 7 years old. They never eat people food but I never give them canned or soft food. A few years ago we had 2 Himalyans that lived to be 12 and 15 years old. The 12 year old died from kidney failure but this was something that just happened. Everyone who has lost a pet has my deepest regrets. I know it’s like losing a family member. The best thing to do is get another pet ASAP and this will help with the grief even though nothing will ever replace your pet you lost.

I just wanted everyone to know that our Dog Barney died on 3/15/07 from Chronic Rental Failure. I have contacted MenuFoods and they have not returned my call.
It is so sad to lose someone you are close too. This was a small person in a furry coat. I have four packs of food with the UPC codes.
I just hope no one else has suffered like he did. My husband and I are still very upset from losing him. We only tried to giving him the best. Just look at this beautiful dog.

I’m so sad to hear all these poor pets are sick or dead because of petfood manufacturers. I’m hoping that this will make people want to look at alternatives to commercial petfood like I did last year when Diamond Dog was killing pets.
I did a lot of research and changed my dogs to a raw diet. They eat like a real carnivore should, not on wheat and corn and other veggies. In just three days I noticed such an improvement in their health that I will never feed commercial food ever again.
Before pet foods were manufactured dogs ate real meat and lived longer. Now we have so many ailments affecting our pets and nobody is looking at their diets! The cancer rates in dogs has skyrocketed!
And most dog foods contain dead animals from rendering plants including euthanized dogs and cats, roadkill, diseased cattle. It is said that the drugs used to put them down are not cooked away and are also in this meal.
What are we doing to our pets?

Pet-food recall: Thursday-morning numbers
From the PetConnection.com database. 6 a.m. PT:
Total reports of sick or dead pets: 1529
Deceased pets: 769
Of those:
Cats, deceased: 460
Dogs, deceased: 309
As we’ve written before, these are self-reported numbers. But we asked
people to check the food against the recall list, to list the food and give
us the names of their veterinarians. The majority did all of this.
Please go to the site to read the entire report:

ALSO, please read the Press Release (March 21) put out by Dr. Marty Becker,
DVM:

I find it hard to believe cats/dogs are dying after 1 pouch or can of food. Are they looking into DRY food? My cat, Jack, died a week ago Sunday after he stopped eating 9 days earlier - we recently switched to Hill Prescription Md food - anyone else loose a pet suddenly on dry food? The vet couldn’t figure out what was wrong and we were seeking a second opinion when he died (prior to this he was fine and recently had a check-up). Our neighbors cat also stopped eating and died this past Sunday - could it be something else? Are they spraying in Tampa? I am going crazy thinking we could have saved our best buddy! Is there something else going on? Please respond if your pet ate dry food and what kind. HELP!

I just want to make everyone completely aware of the dangers this food poses to your pet. You see, my great friend, Max, died recently. A seven year old beautiful Great Dane, who was closer to me then most people in my life died a slow, horrible and painful death. He died in front of my two young children...blood pouring from his mouth. I carried his 120lb body (fully 20lbs less than a couple months before) and buried him in the rain. He died too young and I simply assumed he was the typical large breed that dies at an early age. Apparently this was not the case. My ex-wife had been feeding Max various brands of “bits and gravy” wet food because she felt bad that the cats were getting wet food and Max was not...she had no idea that he was being poisoned with every bite. He suffered for two months with all the symptoms. Diagnosis: Kidney failure maybe...perhaps liver failure....maybe even congestive heart failure. The vet just didn’t know, but she felt he was too far gone to get an exact diagnosis. I mean, did it really matter? He was dying...and when you’re dyiong and there’s no hope of recovery to a healthy state, I suppose it doesn’t really matter why your dying right? Just enjoy those last moments and make them the best that you can. I miss him beyond what words can convey and I am angered by this recent revelation of tainted pet food. There are still many questions that need to be answered and as pet owners (and you journalists out there), we need to demand answers. What was tainted about this food? What caused it? Who is responsible and why? Was it more of a cost saving issue? Were profits involved? Why wasn’t it reported earlier? This has been going on for some time, so why wasn’t the public warned? How did they figure it out and finally come to a point that they would have to recall their products? Did they think a few pet deaths would go unnoticed and it wasn’t worth the Wall Street hit to do a recall earlier? The answers have to be out there and we should demand this from them so that it never happens again. It sickens and angers me, because I know...deep down...this was an issue involving a company’s profits and bottom line. This is why our pets died and many more have become sick. For all those who read this..and look at your pets as not only a “dog” or a “cat”, give them a hug, pet them, take them for that walk you’ve neglected to take them on. Love them and let them know you care. Max was like a brother to me....pure and spirit, non-judmental, playful and wise. He was a friend.
