AUL RASSINIER is known as the father of Holocaust revisionism. Rassinier is an unlikely man to have earned such a title. During World War II, Rassinier was a highly decorated member of the French Resistance. In October of 1943 he was arrested by the Gestapo for various activities including the smuggling of Jewish refugees over the Franco-Swiss border. Rassinier was sent to the concentration camp at Buchenwald for his activities. Later he would be moved to Dora where he would stay through the war’s end.
After the war, Rassinier returned to his native France and was elected to the Assemblee Nationale. He was awarded the highest decoration by the French government for his involvement with the Resistance during the war. Rassinier, who was trained in history, set out after the war to document his experiences within the German concentration camp system. The vivid and accurate depictions of life at Buchenwald and Dora should be read by any who are interested in the subject. Rassinier paints the horrible picture of the dead being brought from Dora to Buchenwald for cremation, “Every day trucks brought full loads of dead bodies from Dora to be cremated at Buchenwald, and it was from the prescence of these corpses that the horrors of the camp were deduced.” (Holocaust Story and the Lies of Ulysses p.38 hereafter HSLU) Rassinier details the alarming death rate at Buchenwald due to, “bad treatment, the poor and insufficient food, the super human work, the lack of medicines, and ... pneumonia” (HSLU p.44) It was following the publication of Rassinier’s earliest works that he realized that the war-time stories of other inmates were both popular and terrible exaggerations. Rassinier wrote,
“Then one day I realized that a false picture of the German camps had been created and that the problem of the concentration camps was a universal one, not just one that could be disposed of by placing it on the doorstep of the National Socialists. The deportees-many of whom were Communists- had been largely responsible for leading international political thinking to such an erroneous conclusion. I suddenly felt that by remaining silent I was an accomplice to a dangerous influence.” (HSLU p.109)
Rassinier began to debunk and deconstruct the works of his fellow inmates. A tremendous effort was made to debunk Raul Hilberg’s Destruction of the European Jews. Rassinier went as far as to predict that in the future, Hilberg’s volume “will not be spoken of at all, or if it is still mentioned, it will only be mentioned in reference to something unworthy of notice except as an example of the most scandalous aberrations of our times.” (HSLU p. 212)
By now, Rassinier had become skeptical of the lurid gas chamber stories which were being circulated. He wrote, “In 1950, it was still too soon to pronounce a definite judgment on the existence of gas chambers in the camps; documents were wanting and those that existed were incomplete, inexact, and obviously apocryphal or falsified.” (HSLU p.158) In the 1964 article, The Drama of the European Jews, Rassinier’s view became more firm:
“With regard to gas chambers, the almost endless procession of false witnesses and of falsified documents to which I have invited the reader’s attention during this long study, proves, nevertheless, only one thing: never at any moment did the responsible authorities of the Third Reich intend to order- or in fact, order - the extermination of the Jews in this or any other manner. Did such exterminations take place without orders? This question has haunted me for fifteen years.” (HSLU p.270)
Rassinier had determined that no wide-spread gassings took place and that there was no policy to exterminate the Jews of Europe. He also provided revisionists with the first real quantitative analysis of Jewish wartime deaths. His final total put the range of Jewish deaths for the twelve years of Nazism between 987,592 and 1,589,492. (HSLU p.389-90). Many years later, Professor Arthur Butz, author of, The Hoax of the Twentieth Century basically accepted Rassinier’s analysis and commented, “I will offer here no definite estimate of Jewish losses. However, I have no strong reason to quarrel with Rassinier’s estimate.” (Hoax p.17) Rassinier would later become even more certain about the falsity of the gas chamber claims. As a result of his studies, he made the following conclusion in The Real Eichmann Trial, “There never were any gas chambers, nor any exterminations by that method at Auschwitz-Birkenau.” (Real Eichmann Trial p.98)

WASHINGTON – A frustrated artist and an angry man, the suspect in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting once tried to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve board, a “caper” thwarted when a guard captured him outside a board meeting carrying a bag stuffed with weapons.
James Von Brunn, 88, a white supremacist and Holocaust denier, describes the assault with apparent pride on his Web site, the source of fulmination against Jews and races other than his own.
Von Brunn was sentenced in 1983 to more than four years in prison for attempted armed kidnapping and other charges in his Fed assault. He was released in 1989.
“The subject resides in my memory like old road-kill,” he wrote. “What could have been a slam-bang victory turned into ignoble failure. Recalling all of this presents an onerous task. I am getting near the end of the diving board.”
Despite the revolver, sawed-off shotgun and knife found in his bag that day, Von Brunn insisted he was trying to place the board under “legal, non-violent citizens-arrest.”
A self-described artist, advertising man and author living in Annapolis, Md., Von Brunn wrote an anti-Semitic treatise, “Kill the Best Gentiles,” that he said no one would publish. He decries “the browning of America” and claims to expose a Jewish conspiracy “to destroy the White gene-pool.”
Von Brunn also wrote, “The ‘Holocaust’ Religion is destroying Western Civilization. The Aryan gene-pool dies, ‘unwept, unhonored and unsung.’”
His lengthy, often rambling online biography aside, law enforcement officials are trying to piece together details of Von Brunn’s life.
Two law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, said investigators are trying to better understand time he spent in Idaho, and how he acquired the .22-caliber rifle used in Wednesday’s attack. At the request of the U.S. Park Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is tracing the weapon. Under federal law, convicted felons cannot purchase firearms.
In his account of his “Federal Reserve caper,” the St. Louis native relates his “character shapers” — among them a schoolyard bully who beat him up, vacation days on the Mississippi River, his service on a PT boat in World War II, and what he said was his first trouble with the law — a year in jail for tussling with a sheriff on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in 1968, the year he moved to the area from New York City.
Von Brunn applied to have his art shown at the Troika Gallery in Easton, Md., around the time the gallery opened about 12 years ago, two of the owners, Laura Era and Jennifer Wharton, told The Associated Press. They said they turned him down because it was not up to their quality and that made Von Brunn angry.
“He stomped out,” Wharton said. “You don’t normally get that reaction from artists.”
They say his work was not strange or violent, but the artists they show have many years of professional experience.
Era and Wharton said they had heard that Von Brunn had been in jail because of his political beliefs and knew that he had prejudices. They did not feel comfortable around him, but said they didn’t want to make him an enemy.
One time Von Brunn arrived at the gallery livid because he had just seen a mixed race couple getting married at the garden of the historical society nearby, Era and Wharton said.
Von Brunn was not around for years, but turned up a year or two ago. He did not spend as much time at their gallery as before and they did not encourage him to, the women said.
They said Von Brunn’s work depicted images such as horses and buffalo in the American West or an eagle with the U.S. flag.
Von Brunn’s biography on the artists’ directory askart.com says his father, Elmer, was superintendent of Scullin steel mill of St. Louis, and their family, on both sides, migrated from Germany and Austria in 1845 or near that year. He is listed as producing portraits, illustrations, graphics and more.
Von Brunn’s accounts of what shaped his character as a boy and young man are heavy with dark episodes blamed on Jews and other minorities. After each account, he draws a “moral.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — An 88-year-old gunman with a violent and virulently anti-Semitic past opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, fatally wounding a security guard before being shot himself by other officers, authorities said.
The assailant was hospitalized in critical condition, leaving behind a sprawling investigation by federal and local law enforcement and expressions of shock from the Israeli government and a prominent Muslim organization.
Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the gunman was “engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door” with a rifle. “The second he stepped into the building he began firing.”
Law enforcement officials said James W. von Brunn, a white supremacist, was under investigation in the shooting and that his car was found near the museum and tested for explosives. The weapon was a .22-caliber rifle, they added. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss the investigation just beginning.
When von Brunn was captured he possessed a list he had made of lawmakers on Capitol Hill, according to another law enforcement officer who requested anonymity. The purpose of the list was not immediately clear, the official said.
The dead guard, Stephen Tyrone Johns, 39, was a six-year veteran of the facility who lived in Temple Hills, Md. Museum Director Sara Bloomfield said he “died heroically in the line of duty.”
At the White House, just blocks away from the museum, President Barack Obama said: “This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust Museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world.”
Von Brunn has a racist, anti-Semitic Web site and wrote a book titled “Kill the Best Gentiles,” alleging a Jewish conspiracy “to destroy the white gene pool.” Writings attributed to von Brunn on the Internet say the Holocaust was a hoax. “At Auschwitz the ‘Holocaust’ myth became Reality, and Germany, cultural gem of the West, became a pariah among world nations,” one says.
In 1983, he was convicted of attempting to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve Board and served more than six years in prison. He was arrested two years earlier outside the room where the board was meeting, carrying a revolver, knife and sawed-off shotgun. At the time, police said von Brunn wanted to take the members hostage because of high interest rates and the nation’s economic difficulties.
The museum, which opened in 1993 and has drawn nearly 30 million visitors, houses exhibits and records relating to the Holocaust of more than a half century ago in which more than 6 million Jews died at the hands of Nazis. Its Web site says the museum “teaches millions of people each year about the dangers of unchecked hatred and the need to prevent genocide.”
The museum was crowded with schoolchildren and other tourists at the time of the attack, but they all escaped injury in the outburst of violence.
Ashley Camp, 14, of Forsyth, Ill., on a field trip with more than 40 other students, said she heard two or three gunshots. Soon after, she recalled, a security guard ordered the group to run to the exit.
“We had to sprint as fast as we could out the door,” she said. “I thought it was the movie (part of a museum exhibit), but then everyone started screaming and running.”
The attack was the third in a recent wave of unsettling shootings that appeared to have political or ethnic underpinnings.
A 23-year-old Army private, William Andrew Long, was shot and killed outside a recruiting office this month in Arkansas and a fellow soldier was wounded. The suspect, a Muslim convert, has said he considers the killing justified because of the U.S. military presence in the Middle East.
Late last month, abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in his church.
Johns, the security guard killed Wednesday, was black.
Only last week, Obama visited the site of a German concentration camp at Buchenwald in Germany where he noted, “There are those who insist the Holocaust never happened.” He added, “This place is the ultimate rebuke to such thoughts, a reminder of our duty to confront those who would tell lies about our history.”
In a statement from Israel’s government, Information and Diaspora Minister Yuli Edelstein said the shooting was “further proof that anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial have not passed from the world.”
And the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a prominent American Muslim organization, said in a statement, “We condemn this apparent bias-motivated attack and stand with the Jewish community and with Americans of all faiths in repudiating the kind of hatred and intolerance that can lead to such disturbing incidents.”
Within minutes after the attack, federal agents were dispatched to von Brunn’s condominium in Annapolis, Md., to check his computer. A neighbor, Harold Olynnger, said in an interview that he and his wife had not been allowed back in their condo since early afternoon because agents feared the suspect’s home might contain explosives.
Joseph Persichini, assistant director in charge of the Washington FBI field office, said the shootings were being investigated as a possible hate crime or a case of domestic terrorism.
According to a relative, von Brunn attended Washington University in St. Louis and is an artist.

Navy records show von Brunn enlisted in 1942 as an apprentice seaman before accepting an appointment as a naval midshipmen in the volunteer reserves in March 1943. On his application for enlistment, the 21-year-old listed his reason for signing up as “patriotic.” His records show he had language qualifications in both English and French after spending three years in college. He was discharged from the Navy in 1956.
A cousin, Virginia Gerker of St. Louis, said in an interview she hadn’t seen him in 50 years. She said her family had “disowned” him and believed him to be mentally ill.

Miami Herald reporter had run-in with Holocaust Museum suspect

James vonn Brunn was charged with first-degree murder Thursday in a brazen shooting death at Washington’s Holocaust Museum.
But there was a time when von Brunn didn’t want the public to know how much he hated Jewish people. I know because he was furious at me for wanting to spread the word.
This was May 1994, and I was working as a reporter for The Star Democrat, the local newspaper in von Brunn’s hometown of Easton, Md. My assignment: Find the source of an anti-Semitic program airing on Easton’s cable access channel. That search led me to von Brunn, then in his early 70s.
‘’The enemy of the white race has always been the Jew,’’ von Brunn told me as we sat in a conference room off the newsroom. ``They seek to destroy us.’’
Though I took notes throughout, von Brunn became agitated when he realized I planned to report not just on the cable shows, but on him, too. Easton Cable mostly aired grainy footage from youth sports games and the high school prom, so we were fascinated to know who had secured air time (as was his legal right) for a show that dismissed Anne Frank’s diary as fiction created by her father.
In the videos, three men sat in front of a Canadian flag and pointed out alleged discrepancies in the Frank diaries. Von Brunn did not appear in the videos, and no one at the paper was familiar with him.
The article I wrote in my ninth month in my first newspaper job didn’t identify his occupation, only that von Brunn was a local businessman. (He was in the mortgage business during that period, a Star Democrat editor told me Wednesday.)
Von Brunn told me publishing his quotes would hurt his standing in Easton, a town of 12,000 near the Chesapeake Bay.
His quotes certainly would have raised some eyebrows. When I asked von Brunn if he was a racist, he replied: ‘’Definitely. I am an acknowledged racist in that all races should have the right to develop their own culture.’’ He called the Holocaust a ``cruel hoax.’’
And there were some details I thought were so bizarre I probably wouldn’t use them—like von Brunn’s seemingly fantastic claim he once was punished for trying to kidnap a member of the Federal Reserve.
That, of course, was true. He was arrested for the attempted kidnapping in 1981 and served time in a federal prison. But before easy access to the Internet, verifying such deals at a small newspaper was difficult.
In fact, there was quite a bit about von Brunn I didn’t discover before the article ran.The Southern Poverty Law Center had been tracking him since the 1980s, and he was active in the white supremacist movement. But it wasn’t until the Internet became an information superhighway that von Brunn’s private views became so easily accessible. He posted online chapters of his pro-Hitler treatise, Kill the Best Gentiles, and sold copies from an Easton post office box of an organization called Holy Western Empire LLC.
Worried about where my article was heading, von Brunn protested to the paper’s publisher, who called the two of us and my editor into his corner office.
I thought von Brunn might try to dispute my account of his racist worldview. Instead, he revealed more layers of it, insisting U.S. soldiers in World War II fabricated accounts of Nazi concentration camps.
When my editor, Denise Riley, objected, von Brunn quickly dismissed her as part of a larger effort to keep views like his suppressed.
‘’Mrs. Riley, how do I know you don’t have some sort of hidden bias?’’ I quoted von Brunn as saying. ``How do I know you’re not married to a Jew?’’
It was one of those scenes even a young reporter knew would make great copy, and I was taking down every word. This was part of the problem von Brunn had come to the office to fix, and he ordered me to stop taking notes. Of course, I didn’t. . . . So he reached over, grabbed the top of my notebook and tried to snatch it from my hands.
That didn’t work; I was about 50 years younger and was holding on fairly tightly. But it did end my time with James von Brunn. The publisher ordered him out of the building, and von Brunn complied.
The article ran with all of the quotes you read here. And I never thought of von Brunn again until a Star-Democrat editor called me Wednesday afternoon to remind me of who he was.

WASHINGTON – James von Brunn carried a lifetime of hatred and an aging rifle to the entrance of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, authorities say, and was met with a simple act of kindness: a security guard opening the door for him. Critically injured in a hospital bed Thursday, the 88-year-old white supremacist was charged with murdering Steven T. Johns, the black guard.
According to interviews with family, friends and civil rights groups, von Brunn spent decades spewing hate toward Jews and blacks — a hatred that was nearing a crescendo in the weeks before the shooting.
At least one acquaintance said he suspected that von Brunn was preparing for a violent end.
Von Brunn had talked about giving up “precious things” — even the computer from which he spread his angry diatribes against Jews, interracial dating and the government, said fellow white supremacist John de Nugent.
“He said he had gone offline,” said de Nugent, who last spoke to von Brunn on the phone a few weeks ago.
De Nugent said von Brunn complained that his Social Security benefits had been reduced, and he suspected that his white supremacist views were the reason.
“He was unhappy with his living situation,” de Nugent said.
Von Brunn lived in a condo in Annapolis with his 32-year-old son, Erik von Brunn, and his son’s fiancee, according to charging documents. The couple charged him $400 a month and when he moved in two years ago, he brought two rifles with him, the fiancee, Brandy Teel, told FBI agents. No one answered the door Thursday at their condo.
When next-door neighbor Harold Olynnger, 82, invited von Brunn over for a drink about three months ago, it didn’t go well.
Von Brunn sipped on a vodka tonic and talked about how he believed the media paid too much attention to the Holocaust, Olynnger said.
On his Web site, von Brunn said he is a descendant of German immigrants who became convinced Jews controlled the government. He boasted of having spent a year in jail for fighting a sheriff’s deputy in Maryland in 1968 and, a quarter-century later, of serving prison time for trying to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve board.
After he got out, he became a regular in white supremacist circles and soon had his own file with watch groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. He wrote an anti-Semitic text and maintained his conspiracy theories on the Web site.
The St. Louis native worked in advertising in New York City and moved to Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the late 1960s, where he stayed in advertising and tried to make a mark as an artist.
Public records show that in 2004 and 2005 he lived briefly in Hayden, Idaho, for years home to the Aryan Nations, a racist group run by neo-Nazi Richard Butler.
When he lived in Easton, Md., von Brunn had a series of run-ins with local residents. He hired Robert E. Denney to create a Web site, then sued him when Denney realized the sort of material von Brunn wanted to publish and balked, said Harry M. Walsh Jr., Denney’s former attorney.
In 1994, von Brunn was upset that The Star Democrat of Easton wouldn’t run an advertisement for an anti-Semitic program on a public-access channel, recalled executive editor Denise Riley. Von Brunn spouted a series of racist and anti-semitic comments before he was asked to leave the newsroom, Riley said.
“I was stunned to have met anyone who acted like that. I don’t remember encountering anyone that bigoted before in my life,” Riley said. “He was right out there for all to know and see and he was just so angry, it was kind of alarming to be around him.”
Despite his tirades, his ex-wife was surprised by the charges against him. “He was a fine man and very much of an American,” said Pat Sadowski, who lives in Florida and said van Brunn hasn’t been a part of her life since their divorce more than 30 years ago. “He was like a John Wayne type.”
On Wednesday, von Brunn parked his 2002 red Hyundai in the middle of traffic outside the museum, according to an FBI affidavit. He grabbed a .22-caliber rifle and walked toward the building.
The gun was a vintage Winchester rifle manufactured between 1908 and 1928, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case. The gun is too old to be traced to a purchaser, the official said.
Johns, the security guard, opened the door for von Brunn. Before von Brunn even got into the building, he pointed his gun at Jones’ heart and pulled the trigger. Johns later died at a hospital.
As von Brunn walked into the doorway and raised his rifle again, two security guards fired at him at least eight times. He was shot in the face and fell backwards outside the door.
Investigators found 10 rounds in von Brunn’s rifle and a signed, handwritten screed in his car. “You wanted my weapons — this is how you’ll get them,” von Brunn wrote.
“It was a desperate move,” said de Nugent’s girlfriend, Margaret Huffstickler, “by a man who thought he couldn’t do any more.”
